First and Second Cycle Layers

A hen will begin laying eggs around 18 weeks of age. She will continue laying eggs during this first laying cycle until molting occurs around 70 weeks of age. Molting is a naturally occurring period of time where a hen stops laying eggs to rejuvenate her body in preparation for her second cycle of laying eggs.

Breeders 
A breeder operation houses roosters and hens in the same barn. The fertilized eggs are transported to a hatchery and carefully moved into incubators. Depending on the breed, the chicks hatched from these eggs will become broilers, layers or breeders.
